Asphalt Shingled Roofs

Asphalt shingles have much to offer. They come in an array of colors, textures, and styles. They are also affordable, making them a cost-effective solution for countless homeowners. The primary differences between the two are the amount of material used, as well as the overall quality of each product.

Compared to 3-tab shingles which can last from around 20 to 30 years, architectural shingles will be able to last you 30 to 45 years. You’re practically saving money because you won’t have to invest too much in roof replacements.

Three Tab Asphalt Shingles

Architectural Asphalt Shingles

3-tab asphalt shingles are a type of residential roofing shingle that lay flat are named for the three 12 inch tabs on each shingle strip. The tabs are evenly spaced on the lower edge of the shingle and fit together like puzzle pieces when installed, creating a uniform, flattened pattern of rectangular shingles. 3-tab shingles can be textured or flat, and come in various colors, shapes and sizes. This asphalt shingle used to dominate the residential roofing industry until the technology improved architectural asphalt shingle were introduced.

3-tab shingles are known for being affordable, the cheapest roofing material on the market, easy to install and repair, and having a simple design. They are also familiar to most roofers. 3-tab shingles are asphalt-based products made from Asphalt of poorer quality then architectural shingles. Are thinner and 50 percent lighter than architectural shingles.

3-tabs work by shedding water to the shingle below and come with warranties of 20, 25, or 30 years. However, realistically, you can expect to get around 20-22 years out of a 3-tab shingle roof, as opposed to the manufacturer-specified lifespan of 25 years. For comparison, an architectural shingle roof should last around 25-28 years

Architectural shingles are more substantial
than 3-tab are 50 percent heavier and base mat on an architectural shingle is thicker than that on a 3-tab shingle. This makes the architectural shingle a sturdier roofing material. These shingles also comprise stronger adhesives, and they have more granules on their top surface and made from asphalt of a finer quality than 3-tab shingles

Architectural shingles are also referred to as three dimensional shingles. This is because they provide a more dimensional look to the roof. Each shingle appears more dimensional because it is; multiple layers of materials adhere to the base. They can be made to resemble cedar shakes, which may add much to a home’s curb appeal and can also be constructed to simulate the look of slate, but without the added weight that slate would bring to a roof.
